By any definition I can think of, I am a cyborg:
- I have Bluetooth earbuds in my ears all day so I can listen to music and talk to virtually any person anywhere on earth at any time.
- Whenever I view a screen, I wear non-corrective (i.e. non-prescription) eyeglasses that block blue light, reducing eye strain and managing my circadian rhythms and sleep cycles.
- I have within arm’s reach at all times a smartphone, laptop, and/or desktop computer that can each do far more than I’ll ever know.
- I own and sometimes wear virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) HMDs (head-mounted devices) that alter or augment my visual and aural perception. The VR hand controllers also provide limited haptic feedback.
- I often carry binoculars in my messenger bag (to watch birds).
- I measure my weight, body fat percentage, and other body biometrics at least once per day.
- I usually drive a car when I leave the house and go more than a few blocks. I sometimes fly in planes when I need to go long distances.
- I always carry a multi-tool in my pocket (except when flying on planes).
- I have a collection of power tools at the ready in my garage.
- I have a collection of Arduino boards, IoT (internet of things) sensors, 3D-printers, and other 21st century tools at the ready in my office.
- I once had metal plates affixed directly to my bones.
We no longer use technology. We are technology.
