Caterpillar Goo

Many, many people, myself included, are trying to figure out what to do with their life right now. This was already true three months ago, and the pandemic, quarantine, and recession have forced many of us to confront our circumstances and choices. Everything is up in the air, unknowable. It feels impossible to plan anything beyond tonight’s dinner. We’re in the middle of the Great Reset.

I like to think of it as a metamorphosis. We’re caterpillars in a cocoon. We’re wrapped up in silk, and our old selves have begun to dissolve. There’s no going back to what we were before. We’re caterpillar goo.

Many of us allow ourselves to become anxious about this condition. We haven’t yet emerged as butterflies. We don’t even know what kind of butterfly we will be. We’re goo. Who wants to be goo?

It will soon be time to emerge, time to fly. But right now, it’s time to be goo. So let’s be one with our goo. Enjoy it for what it is, knowing that it won’t last. Enjoy the process of discovering ourselves and deciding what we’ll become next. Remember that we will soon emerge into a new world and fly away into a dazzlingly diamond-bright sky.
