Hiring is a Long-Term Commitment

Hiring is a long-term commitment. Don’t hire without a long-term commitment, even if we have a strong short-term need.

Further, don’t hire until we have both the time and resources to train the new employee. If we have managers under us, they’ll mirror the behavior, which means if we do hire one or two employees without providing them effective training and resources, we’ll soon have an entire organization full of untrained and ineffective people.

Even with effective training, it takes at least 3-4 months for new employees to create value and 6-7 months to break even. New employees just consume resources in the beginning. Don’t hire them unless and until you’re ready to spend that much time, money, and other resources for at least a year in order to make the investment worthwhile.
